In fact, the almost 80.000 inhabitants live in the city centre, on the coast of Mijas (also known as Las Lagunas), which is the nearest part of the town of Fuengirola, and the coastal area of La Cala.

As the first step of your day in Mijas, stop by the pilgrimage church Santuario de la Virgen de la Peña, one of the monuments you must see if you are in Mijas in one day. Here, the Virgin is said to have appeared to two children, led here by a dove in 1586. On September 8th, the image of the Virgin is carried in a procession up to the Ermita del Calvario, 2 km far from the Church.

The best moment to visit this 16th-century church built into a rock is in the morning. In fact, during sunrise, the sun rays will accompany you through your visit, and enable you to enjoy incredible views over the coastline close to Mijas and Fuengirola.

How can I get to Mijas?

Mijas is easily accessible through public transport from various towns of the province, especially from the West Costa del Sol.

The closest train station is in Fuengirola, and it connects with Malaga, Torremolinos and Benalmadena, among others. Renfe offers daily routes, about every 20 minutes.

From Fuengirola, you can reach Mijas Pueblo thanks to a bus service. You will find the bus station a few meters away from the train station of Fuengirola. Buses leave from here and stop in some very picturesque towns, the final stage being Mijas’ city centre. It will take you no more than an hour and a half to get here from Malaga.

Alternatively, you can reach the village of Mijas by car. The A7 connects Mijas with Malaga and its airport, for which it can be easily reached from almost every point of Andalucia.

Moreover, a free shuttle service has been created to take tourists from the parking area on the outskirts of Mijas to the town’s city centre. This service is available from June 15th to September 15th, from 11 am to 2 pm and from 5 pm to midnight.

  • the info about the Virgen de la Pena is not correct The Virgen is paraded round the town from the parochial church to the Virgen de la Pena church in the village on Sept.8th not up 2km to the Caviero. Please visit at Feria time if you like it lively.
