Visit the grandiose Cathedral and a take a stroll on the beach

To start your tour of Cadiz in one day, visit the Barrio del Pópulo, where you will find the majestic Cathedral. Considered among Cadiz’s most famous monuments, the golden dome of the Cathedral represents everyone’s classic image of the city. Its construction ended in 1838, more than a century after the architect started the project. Therefore, the style of the Cathedral is entirely different from the original Baroque plan.

While there, don’t miss visiting one of the Cathedral’s bell towers, the Western Tower (Torre de Poniente). As you go up through an ascending ramp, you will take pleasure in the glimpse of the 127 towers that can still be seen in the city of Cadiz. Once on the top of the Western Tower, enjoy some wonderful views over the whole city, which will leave you breathless.

If you want to enjoy even deeper the striking beauty of the building, take a walk on the adjacent beach of La Caleta, whose peculiar white Bath House and the spectacular views provided make it one of the best beaches in Cadiz.

Two castles worth visiting in Cadiz

You will find the beach of La Caleta amidst two breathtaking castles, the Castillo de Santa Catalina, where you can enjoy art exhibitions and colourful sunsets, and the Castillo de San Sebastián. The latter, which has been made famous by the James Bond movie “007, Die Another Day”, can be easily reached by a footpath from the beach of La Caleta.

Have lunch in the Mercado de Abastos

Recently renewed, the 1837 Mercado de Abastos, in Plaza Libertad, is arguably Spain’s oldest covered market place. It provides visitors with delicious specialities you will surely enjoy if you feel hungry. In fact, in the market, you will have the possibility to taste wonderful delicacies from Cadiz, Spain, and even international-origin food.

You can do so in the Market’s Rincón Gastrónomico, whose opening hours are the following:

  • Monday: 9 am – 4 pm
  • Tuesday to Friday: 9 am – 3.30 pm, and 7 pm – 12 am
  • Saturday: 9 am – 4 pm, and 8 pm – 1 am
  • Closed on Sunday

An astonishing jump back in time

Now that your stomach is full, and your batteries recharged, move towards the South of the city. Behind the Cathedral, you will find the Casa del Obispo, a charming building that displays the millennial history of Cadiz, from the Roman empire to the contemporary era.

If you fancy knowing more about the Romans’ passage through Cadiz, get closer to the Teatro Romano, the ancient Roman Theatre of Spain, among those that are still preserved. Here, you will have the possibility to feel on your skin the old atmosphere in which this part of the city is immersed.

Keep discovering the history of Cadiz in one day

As the last stages of your day in Cadiz, go north until you reach the Museo de Cádiz. Vestiges from Phoenician and Roman times, magnificent paintings, statues, and canvases will make it easy to understand why it is said to be the best museum of the whole province.

Lastly, you can’t leave Cadiz without stopping by the Monumento a la Constitución de 1812, in Plaza de España. This 1912 monument, also known as “Monumento a las Cortes”, was built to celebrate the one-hundredth anniversary of Spain’s first liberal constitution, which was signed here back in 1812.

The multiple groups of statues of the monument all have an allegorical meaning. They symbolise agriculture, citizenship, and Spain, located at the feet of the central pillar, on which the constitutional text is written. The statues situated on the two sides of the pillar represent Peace and War.
